Core Competency Assessment
Assessment of key undergraduate competencies at VCU is guided by the SCHEV Policy on Student Learning Assessment and Quality in Undergraduate Education. While many core competencies align with VCU’s general education curriculum—known as "ConnectED"—this process represents a broader undergraduate education assessment framework rather than solely general education assessment.
ConnectED serves as a cornerstone of our undergraduate programs, bridging academic learning and real-world experiences to help students broaden their perspectives both within and beyond the classroom. However, certain SCHEV-mandated competencies, such as civic engagement, are assessed as institution-wide core learning goals across the student experience rather than as dedicated ConnectED general education learning outcomes.
Core competency learning outcomes are assessed systematically on a multi-year cycle to support evidence-based continuous improvement and meaningful academic change. Below are available assessment reports and summaries.
